Summer Programs in Early Learning

thumbnail_image1.jpg

Thanks to the amazing support from donors, our Early Learning Center students have a great opportunity for a summer enrichment program with the Providence Children's Museum! PCM is providing a 6-week series of enrichment activities for children at the Genesis Center.

This program kicked off last week and was a success! Thank you to the Providence Children’s Museum for this great partnership.

This week, we also began our partnership with the Knight Memorial Library. The Children's Librarian, Melissa, and her assistant, Emily, read Lali's Feather by Farhana Zia and led the students in a craft activity. They made their very own feather necklaces with beads and stickers. The day ended with lunch on the grass and a "Family Connection Kit" supplied by the national summer reading program: Narragansett, Niantic, and Wampanoag Peoples. Families are encouraged to create an authentic house by using the bag of pipe cleaners, paper, crayons, and printed animal card sheets. We look forward to more programming this summer with Knight Memorial Library!

Genesis Center Hosts Press Conference on the Care Economy

PC 1.jpg

Genesis Center honored to host Governor Dan McKee, Congressman David Cicilline, and Congressman Jim Langevin this morning as part of the #CareEconomy week of action.

President and CEO Shannon Carroll spoke about childcare as an economic driver, “Fortunately for the nation, for RI, for childcare providers like Genesis Center, the climate is changing and people are recognizing that childcare and early learning are critical drivers of our workforce. Without high quality, consistent care and learning, our families cannot attain and retain high quality, living wage jobs.“

Early Learner Center Director Ngina Johnson shared her experience as a parent and an educator, "So many parents are being forced to make hard family decisions right now. Childcare and education shouldn’t be one of them. They deserve the comfort that I have every day of bringing their child or children here to a place like Genesis Center, where they know that their children are loved and receiving a quality education."

We are grateful for the opportunity to highlight the importance of access to affordable, high-quality childcare.

Keys to Success: Congratulations to Aaron and Jhoana!

Congratulations to Aaron and Jhoana, our newest Keys to Success participants!

Aaron is a recent graduate of Building Futures. He learned about the program while the Genesis Center financial coach worked with him and his classmates on budgeting and building credit. Aaron improved his credit score by almost 100 points while saving in the Keys to Success program. This vehicle purchase will help him continue his career as an electrician.

Jhoana learned about the Keys to Success program through the community engagement team at ONE Neighborhood Builders and knew right away it was a great opportunity. She needed to save for a reliable vehicle that would accommodate her growing family. Making a plan and saving up for a larger down payment helped her family get a newer car while still keeping their monthly payment affordable.

Keys to Success is a matched savings program that allows low-moderate income Rhode Islanders to save money for reliable transportation. Thank you to our partners and funders- Pawtucket Credit Union, Harbor One Bank, and The Rhode Island Foundation. If you would like to learn more about the program please contact Chris Ackley at cackley@gencenter.org
