Creative Pathways Program Presented “Out of My Comfort Zone”
June 4 , 2026 It was an exciting night at the Providence Public Library’s Farish Auditorium as Genesis Students staged “Out Of My Comfort Zone: Explorations of the Past Present and Future” in front of over 150 attendees. The original work was written and devised by members of Genesis Center’s Creative Pathways program—a group of individuals from around the world that now call Rhode Island home. The Creative Pathways Program is an innovative pilot initiative funded by the Rhode Island Department of Human Services. Designed for Rhode Island Works participants, the program emphasizes ESOL education through the arts. Participants engage in immersive workshops led by teaching artists and expressive arts therapists, using creativity as a tool not only for learning English, but for personal growth, healing, and community building. The program is made possible by a dedicated team of artists and educators. Eve Kerrigan serves as writing coach and program director, while Drama Therapist Ana Bess Moyer Bell leads the therapeutic components of the program. Noga Paulino is the primary Learning Facilitator for Creative Pathways, and she was very pleased with the student’s work all semester long, “I’m so proud of this class. It takes a lot of work and a lot of courage to get on stage and tell your story—especially as an English language learner.” Creative Pathways begins its third year this September, and the program is already working on additional public performances. ZITA PAUL, CULINARY ARTS
Zita, along with several family members including her three children, came to the United States in September 2023 as a refugee from Haiti. In November 2023, she started ESOL classes at Genesis Center to improve her English skills. Simultaneously, she enrolled in Genesis Center’s Culinary Arts program with the short-term goal of opening a small eatery specializing in authentic Haitian cuisine. Because Zita worked as a nurse in Haiti, her ultimate goal is to return to a career in healthcare. To that end, she is currently enrolled in Genesis Center’s International Medical Graduate (IMG) contextualized ESOL program, in partnership with the RI Welcome Back Center, to help foreign-trained medical professionals obtain the necessary credentials and licenses to work in the US healthcare system.
With Zita’s unwavering determination, there is no doubt that she will soon be a practicing R.N. here in Rhode Island.
