The Genesis Center's Culinary Arts program is a 13-week, hands-on course that prepares participants for a career in the food service industry.

  • A hands-on environment
  • Culinary topics include: Knife skills; traditional cooking/recipes; healthy eating & nutrition 
  • Earn a ServSafe® Food Safety Manager Certificate
  • All participants can earn an opportunity to complete an internship at a local culinary institution; experience that can be included on their resume
  • Other benefits include: Participation in our Financial Opportunity Center; Resume/Job Development; Financial Coaching; Technology, language and math integration; Soft skills & team-building activities; Operate our mini-cafe.

Want a Good Job in Health Care?

The Genesis Center offers twelve-week Health Care Orientation training program for those interested in a career in health care or direct support.

  • Participants learn basic, entry-level content that will familiarize them with the health care field and prepare them to work in the industry.
  • Learn about potential career paths, including CNA, Home Maker, Direct Support,  Elder Care, and various other entry-level health care positions. 
  • Regular workshops and trainings led by industry professionals, including American Heart Association First Aid/CPR training, Alzheimer's care, Nutrition, Respite care and more!
  • All participants may earn the opportunity to complete an internship in the health care industry; this experience helps participants develop a resume, and many students are hired upon successful completion of their internships.
  • Our September and January classes are in partnership with Rhode Island Hospital and Women and Infants Hospitals’ Stepping Up program, which assists our students in getting internships and jobs in hospital settings.
  • Other benefits include: Participation in our Financial Opportunity Center; Resume/Job Development; Financial Coaching; Technology, language and math integration; Soft skills & team-building activities; updated immunizations, TB tests and BCI checks.

Rhode Island Works/Project Opportunity

The Project Opportunity class is a unique program funded jointly by the Rhode Island Department of Education and the Rhode Island Department of Human Services. The purpose of the class is to help parents who are currently receiving benefits under the Family Independence Program to gain the education and skills they need to join the workforce in Rhode Island.

Participants in the program attend classes at The Genesis Center for 30 hours per week. The Project Opportunity program includes the following:

  • English language classes geared to the level of the student’s proficiency
  • Job Search workshops provided by our Job Developer, as well as one-on-one assistance with job placement
  • Services of our Case Manager to work on removing barriers to employment
  • Integrated work readiness, technology instruction and math instruction
  • Internships in the community
