Education Coordinator/Lead Teacher

Job Description

As Education Coordinator, oversees and directs the planning, organizing, and implementation of education services for children. These services contribute to the increased social competence in children and the recognition and enhancement of parents as the primary educators of their children. Works collaboratively with the Childcare Administrator to ensure the Center’s comprehensive early learning childcare program is in compliance with all regulatory standards and partnership contracts. As Lead Teacher, performs the functions of this position with a strong understanding of the Head Start Performance Standards and knowledge and application of Developmentally Appropriate Practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:(include but are not limited to)

Education Coordinator:

  • Responsible for oversight of the development and implementation of the educational/developmental curriculum and program.

  • Uses various evaluation and assessment materials (ITERS, ECERS) to evaluate overall program quality; recommends strategies for improvement and implements quality improvement measures.

  • Organizes and guides curriculum planning for all teachers to ensure early childhood learning standards are being achieved.

  • Observes teachers and makes recommendations for improvement; provides or arranges professional development opportunities.

  • Oversees volunteers and interns in the Center to ensure all compliance standards are being met.

  • Works with childcare staff to promote effective communication with parents.

  • Organizes and develops a Family Engagement Committee, including regular meetings, activities, and family literacy events.

  • Develops and implements activities to promote parent education and participation in the Center; responds to parent inquires, conducts interviews, hosts classroom visits by new families, and assists parents in completing the enrollment process.

  • Provides back-up supervision to all childcare personnel when the Administrator is not on site or unavailable.

  • Collaborates with the Culinary Arts instructor and students to ensure proper preparation and distribution of meals for the childcare program.

  • In collaboration with the Administrator, coordinates staff schedules to ensure appropriate student/staff ratios at all times.

  • Assists staff with planning, developing room arrangements and enrichment activities and ensures that all classroom equipment and furnishings are safe, age appropriate and in good condition.

  • Promotes the health and safety of children and staff by maintaining an environment that encourages exceptional supervision and strategies that minimize risk of harm to all individuals in the Center.

  • Contributes to the mission of the Center by managing childcare services that can accommodate parents who attend other programs at the Genesis Center.

  • Completes all necessary paperwork as required by the Center and partner organizations.

  • Assists staff in completing quarterly reports on each child; helps parents with transition to the public school system.

  • Researches opportunities and linkages to strengthen the childcare program and participates as appropriate.

Lead Teacher:

  • Guide and facilitate activities of the children, including: daily activities in the classroom;

  • Cooperate with other staff and classroom groups to maintain the smooth functioning of the center, which at times may require changes to meet the needs of the children;

  • Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child.

  • Use home visits and parent conferences to discuss the child's individual development and progress, assist the parents in developing observational skills and solicit parent observations;

  • Eat with and assist children in development of social and self-help skills, and sound nutritional practices;

  • Attend staff training and meetings, and parent meetings as requested;

  • Works with Teachers, Teacher Assistant and volunteers to use and develop their skills and abilities in planning and carrying out classroom activities;

  • Responsible for planning curriculum that meets early childhood learning standards, plan and implement activities that relate to monthly themes and that are developmentally appropriate, complete required paperwork and child assessments, and work as a liaison between the Genesis Center and Head Start representatives.

  • Provide direction to the assistant teachers, aides, and volunteers assigned to the Pre-Kindergarten classroom.

Other Duties:

Qualifications: (includes professional & legal standards, knowledge, skills and demonstrated abilities required)

  • Holds current Rhode Island Certificate in Early Childhood Education; or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited or approved institution of higher education and have met the course work and experiential requirements defined in the Rhode Island Early Childhood certification standards.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to NAEYC accreditation standards, RI Early Learning Standards and RI Quality Indicators.

  • Sensitivity and commitment to the Genesis Center mission; understanding and appreciation of special problems and stressors of refugee and immigrant families; and respect for cultural differences.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and in a team and to be flexible and accept change.

  • Ability to prioritize, organize & control work flow and manage data for timely and accurate completion of projects.

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in all aspects of work, including professional.

  • Pass Bureau of Criminal Investigation Clearance via finger printing and Criminal Background check.

  • Certified in Pediatric First Aid and CPR

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift children as needed

  • Pass physical & medical requirements as set by RI regulations for Licensure of childcare centers

  • Visual ability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines.

Hours & Attendance Requirements:

Full-time (M-F) as assigned
